Salt Lake Community College Alumnus and U.S. Diplomat to Speak at 2025 Commencement   SALT LAKE CITY, March 18, 2025— Salt Lake Community College’s 2025 Commencement speaker Branigan Knowlton will share his perspectives drawn from a 12-year career as a Foreign Service Officer with the U.S. Department of State. In serving his country, Knowlton has honed his foreign relations and diplomacy skills in Hong Kong, Mexico, Colombia and Italy. Knowlton is also a proud Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) alumnus (2002).   Knowlton currently serves at the U.S. Embassy in Rome. Before reporting to the embassy, he was detailed to the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport as part of the Transatlantic Diplomatic Fellowship program. In Bogotá, Knowlton worked for the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement, and in Hermosillo, Mexico, he worked for the Bureau of Consular Affairs. The 2025 Beloved Community Photography Project and Concert   Salt Lake Community College is celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.’s  Beloved Community  concept, on how to live in harmony. This concept is brought to life through the eyes of local elementary and middle school students at SLCC’s   Beloved Community Photography Project and exhibit.   The exhibit is the result of SLCC English and Photography faculty visiting local classrooms to help students understand and convey their idea of a Beloved Community in their own lives. SLCC provides the students with cameras and their work is showcased. MEDIA ADVISORY Unveiling of the Utah Women Mural during Women’s History Month

On March 6, Salt Lake Community College will host the formal unveiling of the   Utah Women 2020 Mural   at its South City Campus. The 1,000-square-foot-mural mural features more than 350 women, many of whom have made their mark on the Beehive State. Pop artist and soft-sculpture pioneer Jann Haworth shepherded the project since its inception and, partnering with collage artist Liberty Blake, have painstakingly assembled nearly 300 life-size stenciled portraits to create this living, breathing testament to community and to the remarkable legacy of Utah women throughout history. Nearly 300 individuals were involved in the creation of this monumental tribute to Utah Women. Sweeping Nationals, SLCC’s Cross-Country Women’s and Men’s Become Champions, Again

SALT LAKE CITY, November 11, 2024—The  Salt Lake Community College’s (SLCC) Cross-Country program has risen to become one of the best in the nation, sweeping both the men’s and women’s races this past Saturday (Nov. 9) at the  National Junior College Cross Country Championships in Richmond, Virginia. “ The athletes that returned from last year's teams really helped us maintain our team culture and high standard. Our team motto of NYTJ (Not Your Typical  Junior College ) is really something we live by every day. LDS Church Gift Provides Scholarships for PACE Students at Salt Lake Community College

SALT LAKE CITY, April 10, 2024—The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) recently donated $600,000 to support Salt Lake Community College’s PACE Program ( Partnership for Accessing College Education ). This generous gift will cover tuition, fees, and book expenses for six semesters for SLCC students who have completed their high school PACE Program and will attend the community college.   “We are incredibly grateful for this gift from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to support scholarships for our PACE Scholars. Over the years, I’ve seen how transformative this program is for our first-generation and low-income students, and we have watched these students flourish in higher education here and beyond,” said SLCC President Deneece G. MEDIA ADVISORY Award-winning Filipinx American poet Ina Cariña

Event: Award-winning Filipinx American poet  Ina Cariño  will be reading her poetry at an event open to the public at Salt Lake Community College. Cariño recently published her first book of poems, Feast , which won the 2021 Alice James Award and has a second book coming out in 2026. They are also the recipient of the 2022 Whiting Award.   “We wanted a poet that would appeal to a younger and diverse student population,” says Brenda Sieczkowski, SLCC’s Poet Laureate and an assistant professor of English. “This is an opportunity for our community to hear and engage with a new, up-and-coming voice that has already garnered recognition.” Sieczkowski points out the innovative work Cariño is doing in her home state of North Carolina, where she has developed the Indigena Collective reading series and platform for marginalized creatives.   Cariño will also participate in a broadside printing session and will sign created prints.
