MEDIA ADVISORY Award-winning Filipinx American poet Ina Cariña
Event: Award-winning Filipinx American poet Ina Cariño will be reading her poetry at an event open to the public at Salt Lake Community College. Cariño recently published her first book of poems, Feast, which won the 2021 Alice James Award and has a second book coming out in 2026. They are also the recipient of the 2022 Whiting Award.
“We wanted a poet that would appeal to a younger and diverse student population,” says Brenda Sieczkowski, SLCC’s Poet Laureate and an assistant professor of English. “This is an opportunity for our community to hear and engage with a new, up-and-coming voice that has already garnered recognition.” Sieczkowski points out the innovative work Cariño is doing in her home state of North Carolina, where she has developed the Indigena Collective reading series and platform for marginalized creatives.
Cariño will also participate in a broadside printing session and will sign created prints. For more information on these events that are free and open to the public, visit here.
