MEDIA ADVISORY

Launching New College Access Program at Granger High School

Event: Sixty Granger High School freshmen will receive a free iPad as participants in the school’s new PACE Program (Partnership for Accessing College Education). The Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) donor-funded program has significantly increased high school graduation and college participation rates in the Salt Lake Valley for low-income and first-generation college students, over the last 10 years.

A generous gift from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation will establish Granger as the sixth local high school to host PACE. The need is evident. Granger is the largest high school in the state, and 69% of its 3,400 students participate in the free or reduced lunch program. The press release sent on Jan. 18, can be found on SLCC’s blog.

When: Wednesday, January 24, 2:30-4:30 p.m.

Schedule highlights:

  • 2:40-2:50 p.m.: Introductions and overview
  • 2:50-3:30 p.m.: iPad distribution
  • 3:30-4:25 p.m.: Kahoot! game using new iPads to learn more about PACE.

Where: Granger High School (3580 3600 W, West Valley City), Granger High School Lecture Hall (enter front doors and up the grand staircase).

Note: Granger High’s parking lot is congested when school ends at 2:10 p.m. Students start leaving at 2:00 p.m. To avoid this log jam, arrive earlier (1:50 p.m.).

Who:

  • Deneece G. Huftalin, SLCC President
  • Lisa Eccles, President & COO, the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation
  • Tyler Howe, Principal, Granger High School

Images: Available on request after the event.
