MEDIA ADVISORY Black History Month: Understanding MLK’s Beloved Community Through Students’ Eye

The 2024 Beloved Community Photography Project

To celebrate Black History month, Martin Luther King Jr.’s Beloved Community concept, on how to live in harmony, comes to life through the eyes of local elementary and middle school students at the open house for the Salt Lake Community College’s  Beloved Community Photography Project and exhibit.

The exhibit is the result of Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) English and Photography faculty visiting local classrooms last fall to help students understand and convey their idea of Beloved Community in their own lives. This includes Marian Taylor Howe who shared her stories with youth about her involvement in the civil rights movement in the 1960s and marching with Dr. King. SLCC provides the students with cameras. The students work is showcased in this exhibit.

The schools include in the Beloved Community Photography Project:

  • Whittier Elementary (6th grade)
  • Glendale Middle School (7th and 8thgrade)

Available for potential interviews at event (provide notice if possible):

  • Marian Taylor Howe, civil-rights background (see above).
