MEDIA ADVISORY Award-winning Filipinx American poet Ina Cariña

Event: Award-winning Filipinx American poet  Ina Cariño  will be reading her poetry at an event open to the public at Salt Lake Community College. Cariño recently published her first book of poems, Feast , which won the 2021 Alice James Award and has a second book coming out in 2026. They are also the recipient of the 2022 Whiting Award.   “We wanted a poet that would appeal to a younger and diverse student population,” says Brenda Sieczkowski, SLCC’s Poet Laureate and an assistant professor of English. “This is an opportunity for our community to hear and engage with a new, up-and-coming voice that has already garnered recognition.” Sieczkowski points out the innovative work Cariño is doing in her home state of North Carolina, where she has developed the Indigena Collective reading series and platform for marginalized creatives.   Cariño will also participate in a broadside printing session and will sign created prints. A Pep Talk on Life and Motivation: Gold Medalist Erin Jackson Will Speak to New Graduates at SLCC 2024 Commencement 

  Winter Olympic gold medalist Erin Jackson will motivate new graduates at Salt Lake Community College’s upcoming 2024 Commencement on Friday, May 3, at the Maverick Center. As the commencement speaker, Jackson will share where her own grit, motivation and perspective on failure come from, ultimately resulting in becoming the best female 500-meter speedskater in the world.    Her 2022 Olympic win in speedskating also made her the first Black woman to win a Winter Olympic gold medal in an individual sport and the first American woman to win an Olympic speed skating gold since 2002.       Jackson grew up in Ocala, Florida competing, and winning, as an inline speed skater when she decided to transition to speedskating on ice at 24 years old. Champion for Women in the Trades: Salt Lake Community College Names Hall for Skilled Trades after Senator Karen Mayne

SALT LAKE CITY, March 6, 2023—On March 9, Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) will name a key section of its Westpointe Campus after Senator Karen Mayne to honor her long career history as a strong and tireless advocate for SLCC, and particularly for her support in advancing the skilled trades at the college, including its Salt Lake Technical College.      At the Westpointe campus, which focuses on offering skilled trade classes, the Welding, Machining, and Composites labs will be named in honor of Senator Mayne and the connecting corridor will be named the Karen Mayne Hall for Skilled Trades.    “There has been no one in my 12 years at the college who has been a greater champion of the college and its trade programs. She has been an amazing friend, advocate and supporter of our mission and our students,” said Tim Sheehan, vice president, Government Relations at SLCC. “She is beloved by the SLCC community and by so many oth...
