Champion for Women in the Trades: Salt Lake Community College Names Hall for Skilled Trades after Senator Karen Mayne

SALT LAKE CITY, March 6, 2023—On March 9, Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) will name a key section of its Westpointe Campus after Senator Karen Mayne to honor her long career history as a strong and tireless advocate for SLCC, and particularly for her support in advancing the skilled trades at the college, including its Salt Lake Technical College.

At the Westpointe campus, which focuses on offering skilled trade classes, the Welding, Machining, and Composites labs will be named in honor of Senator Mayne and the connecting corridor will be named the Karen Mayne Hall for Skilled Trades.

“There has been no one in my 12 years at the college who has been a greater champion of the college and its trade programs. She has been an amazing friend, advocate and supporter of our mission and our students,” said Tim Sheehan, vice president, Government Relations at SLCC. “She is beloved by the SLCC community and by so many others who know and respect her.

Since her time in the Utah State Senate (2007), Mayne has helped secure funding for technical education scholarships and was an influential voice in helping the college obtain approval and funding for the Westpointe and Herriman campuses.

She is a champion for women in the trades and has inspired countless women to pursue skilled trades education, succeed in their careers, and contribute to their families, communities and Utah’s economy.

“Senator Mayne authentically and effectively champions opportunities for individuals and families to thrive through skill building and job opportunities,” said longtime colleague and friend, Jennifer Seelig, a former Utah House minority leader. “I am so pleased to see that her efforts will be honored in perpetuity through brick and mortar.”
