MEDIA ADVISORY Highly Visual Event: Salt Lake Communtiy College is hosting Utah’s largest winter lowrider event

The Salt Lake Winter Lowrider Bicycle Show will display more than 35 lowriders (bicycles, tricycles, scooters, push cars, etc.). The lowriders will compete for seven different awards.   The evening will include a powerful panel discussion by Utah lowriders who will speak on the importance, of Chicano/a/x Culture, Familia, social justice, defining lowriders, and policy that affects lowrider culture. MEDIA ADVISORY   SLCC Celebrates Mother Language Day with Award-Winning Poets from Mexico and Guatemala

Salt Lake Community College’s Latin American Studies Program is celebrating International Mother Language Day over three days with award-winning poets Rosa Maqueda Vicente, Hñähñu, from Valle del Mezquital (México), and Miguel Ángel Oxlaj Cúmez, Mayan-Kaqchikel, from Chi Xot (Comalapa, Guatemala). The poets will provide attendees with a unique experience to learn and become immersed in learning poetry in their mother tongue. There will be writing and art workshops for the adults and an art workshop for children (ages 6+).   The public is welcome, and refreshments will be provided. Salt Lake Community College: This Giving Day Help Students Access Affordable Education

On Thursday, February 16, Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) will host its annual Giving Day to raise funds to help make college more affordable to many students who otherwise would not be able to access higher education or workforce training.   The goal of Giving Day is to bring together the college’s stakeholders, employees and the larger community to help raise $500,000 during a 24-hour window in which funds will be matched.   Mountain America Credit Union ,  UFirst Credit Union and SLCC’s Executive Cabinet, Foundation Board and Board of Trustees are matching gifts during specific hours throughout the day. MEDIA ADVISORY Black History Month: Understanding MLK’s Beloved Community Through Students’ Eye

  The 2024 Beloved Community Photography Project   To celebrate Black History month, Martin Luther King Jr.’s Beloved Community concept, on how to live in harmony, comes to life through the eyes of local elementary and middle school students at the open house for the Salt Lake Community College’s  Beloved Community Photography Project and exhibit.   The exhibit is the result of Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) English and Photography faculty visiting local classrooms last fall to help students understand and convey their idea of Beloved Community in their own lives. This includes Marian Taylor Howe who shared her stories with youth about her involvement in the civil rights movement in the 1960s and marching with Dr. King. SLCC provides the students with cameras.
